My Year in Photos - 2022

This year was one of my quietest on the photography front. Most of the photos are from one trip I did with Bernie Shore which was up the Routeburn Track and then into the Valley of the Trolls. It was my second trip into the valley and this time we went all the way to Lake Wilson and beyond. One of the best trips I’ve experienced I reckon. At that point in time the spot was rapidly gaining popularity but it still wasn’t unusual to get the area to yourself if you timed it right. We didn’t. The Upper Clutha Tramping Club just so happened to be camping there overnight. They beat us up there with their heavy canvas tents and took great joy pointing out the weaknesses in Bernie’s brand new MSR tent, “the wind’s going to blow that thing right off the cliff, there’s nothing to it”. They may not have been up to play with the newest technology in tents but they were all bloody fit from a lifetime of tramping. I caught myself thinking it would be great to be that fit when I’m their age (mostly in their 60’s) but who am I kidding? I’d like to be that fit now. I’m pretty sure Bernie lost a toenail and stuffed his achilles, cos he was out of hiking action for a good 6 months after! In the very last photo you can see the pack of canvas-lovers making their way out of the valley, as we watched on from a distance.

Another trip that features heavily in these photos was my holiday with Rosie to Kaikoura. I remember very little of this trip other than getting a nice sunrise one day, and a misty one the next.

Featured in my Top 16 photos of 2022 is Ashburton Lakes, Kaikoura, Routeburn Track and Aoraki/Mount Cook from the South Island. From the North Island we have Cape Palliser, Mount Taranaki and Titahi Bay from the North Island.
