My Year in Photos - 2021
I haven’t posted to this blog since 2021! I have a bit of catching up to do but in the meantime, here’s my favourite 24 images of 2021.
In 2021 I was working as a Projects Estimator. It involved sitting at a desk, working through electrical drawings and specifications, and providing a quote to electrical contractors. Quite different to every other job I’ve had but I worked with good people and that makes all the difference I’ve found.
Half of the photos in this gallery were taken on weekend trips, and the other half during my allotted 4 weeks of annual leave (paid holiday). My wife and I had recently bought a house so we didn’t have the money for extravagant trips but I squeezed in a couple of visits to the South Island that year.
In this gallery we have Ashburton Lakes, Aoraki/Mount Cook, Tekapo, Routeburn Track and Wharariki Beach representing the South Island. From the North Island we have my favourite day trip from Wellington, White Rock, as well as Castlepoint, Waikawa Beach, Titahi Bay, Mount Taranaki, Mount Kaukau (Wellington City), Mount Ngauruhoe, Te Mata Peak and the Tararuas.
I live in Wellington so it’s much cheaper to travel to North Island locations. To get to the South Island involves either flying or taking your vehicle across on the Cook Strait ferry. Neither are inexpensive. Add fuel, accommodation and food and it’s easy to spend a couple of grand for a week down there. It would be much easier/cheaper to just move there I reckon.
My standout trip this year was definitely the Routeburn Track and the side mission into the Valley of the Trolls. If you look closely in that image you can see my tiny yellow tent at the base of the rockfall. Those aren’t rocks though, they’re massive boulders, the size of houses! The scale in that valley really is impressive.
