Trig M - Canterbury
Date: Sunday 24 August 2025 - late afternoon
Location: Trig M, Canterbury
Now that I’m living in Canterbury I’m constantly on the lookout for fun looking hikes with great views. I have explored less than 1% of the walks in the region so there’s plenty to choose from but it’s never an easy choice.
During my marathon Google search session I stumbled across a blog post about Trig M by Kor Adventures and one photo in particular sealed the deal. Trig M it is! Let’s go.
My wife, Rosie, wanted to come along too so we made a day of it, packed-lunch and all. We went mid/late afternoon hoping for that wonderful golden light and maybe even a cracking sunset. August is still winter here in NZ but the day was just perfect for a walk in the hills, around 14 degrees celsius and very little wind.
I’d say we saw less than 10 people in the 3.5 hours we were on the track. A couple with a dog were coming down as we were starting the walk, another couple passed us soon after and that was about it. At the summit there were a few small groups enjoying the last of the sun but they started their return walk as we arrived.
As the sun crept closer and closer to the mountains in the west, the light became warmer, with golden hues blanketing the hills to the east. I was really happy with these shots but there was to be no glorious sunset this day. About an hour from sunset the low cloud drifted in and we decided to head back to the car.
This is another walk I’d happily do again but would head up there early morning next time for sunrise and soft morning light.
